Answer: Dust is the simple reminder of what we are without God. Though
we may become dust in the long run (natural deterioration) or become
dust by means of force (burned to ash), we accept the truth that we
shall return to dust, since God made us out from it.
Thus dust
becomes a symbol of TURNING BACK to God, of humility and repentance and
of turning back to our original state, back to the Creator whose hand
first touched and molded the dust. We hope that in our own returning to
dust, God's hand will be near and will still be in charge.
