July 1941. German-occupied Poland. Auschwitz.
A prisoner has escaped.
As punishment, the Nazis will starve ten men to death.
One of them begs for clemency, crying out, “My wife! My children!”
Fr. Maximilian Kolbe steps forward with words that resound in Catholic hearts to this day: “Let me take this man’s place.”
By means of this singular deed, Fr. Kolbe fired a radiant light into the darkness of the twentieth century.
After a life of heroic Christian love, devotion and evangelization, the actions dramatized in this gripping WWII story represent St. Max’s crowning achievement.
It begins with him as a boy freely and deliberately offering his life to God in a vision.
Then he becomes a monk, earning a doctorate in Rome, teaching seminarians, and establishing what would become a thriving union dedicated to Mary.
To spread devotion to Mary, he founds a popular Catholic magazine, a monastery — where he would later hide thousands of Jews — a religious radio station, and a wartime hospital.
He even creates and serves as publisher of the largest religious newspaper in all of Europe, whose many issues opposed Nazi evil and were distributed to readers throughout the Continent.
Not satisfied with all that, Fr. Kolbe travels to Nagasaki, where a monastery he built to serve the Japanese still stands, having survived the atomic bomb.
All that in a brief life of forty-seven years!
A rich, holy life told in vivid images and exciting detail in this page-turner of a graphic novel.
