A visitor to the Louvre, after looking at the masterpieces of painting for an hour, became exasperated and said to the guide, ‘There is not a thing in here worth looking at. Too many Madonnas, too many pictures of Christ.’ The guide answered, ‘Sir! These pictures are not on trial; you are.’ A civilization, in like manner, that rejects the Divine, chooses material values as the final goal of life, does not put theology or right reason on trial; it puts itself on trial. It is already judged. |
