Wisdom from Archbishop Fulton Sheen

If you search the Scripture, you will find there was only one reason why our blessed Lord came to earth: in order to do away with sin. He took our sins upon himself, as if he were guilty. All the prophecies about him, particularly Isaiah, speak of him as being made one with the transgressors, identifying himself with sinners.

Why did he take sin upon himself? Because he’s the new Adam. We have received an inheritance of weakness from the first Adam. The second Adam, Christ, came and he starts a new humanity. In order to do that, he must blot out sin. So he becomes our stand-in, our representative. He takes our place as if he were guilty of blasphemy, as if he were the sinner.
