Why not say to Nicodemus, ‘Do you believe that I’m a teacher sent from God? I want to encourage you, I want to exhort you, I want to affirm all the truth you are saying’? Why doesn’t Jesus nurse him along? I’m not sure, but my suspicion is that this is the way the Lord treats people whenever they’re suffering from the dangerous delusion of their own adequacy. Whenever you think that you’ve basically got what it takes, and you’re just kind of adding a cherry to the top of your personality cake when you take on Jesus, like, I’ve already arrived, I’m basically what I need to be, and now I’m just going to add religion. That kind of person is actually more susceptible to miss the boat all together than the whore or the woman with five husbands, as we’ll see in the next chapter. |
