The most common Catholic misconception of Protestants is that they disregard tradition. They don’t disregard it; they consult it. They study it; they affirm much of what they find in it. But not all, because they do not deem it to be infallible. They do not deem tradition to be a divine authority. Conversely, Protestants often think that Catholics believe that the Church is the Bible. That is, the Church could dispense somebody from something that God taught in Scripture and still intends for people to observe. Some Protestants also believe that the Church has now limited the Bible’s errorless quality—or its inerrancy—to faith and morals. That is not the Church’s teaching. The Bible is inerrant in all that it affirms, and it’s not restricted just to faith and morals. The Church does not use Tradition to correct Scripture. The Church does not sit in judgment over Scripture. The Church has always said that it is subordinated to the Word in Scripture and it’s a servant of the Word in Scripture. |
