Jesus comes on the scene and he doesn’t just talk about a new kingdom, a new law, in this book of Matthew he demonstrates a new power. He stretches out his hand and he touches the leper. The Pharisees are like, ‘Eww, covenant cooties.’ No, look closer, the leper is cleansed. What do you do with that? They didn’t know. Why? Because instead of being humbled by these laws and acknowledging their own weakness, they took this mirror and turned it around on the nations and said, ‘See how ugly and defiled you are, and see how good we must be.’ Spiritual pride blinded them from the very lesson that God wanted to convey to them. What’s the lesson? Augustine said it nicely: The law was given so that grace we’d seek. And grace was given so the law we’d keep. You don’t ask for something if you don’t think you need it. And you don’t think you need anything more than you’ve got if you’re proud. |
