Running like a golden thread from the beginning of the Beatitudes to the end of the Sermon on the Mount, from chapter 5 through 6, all the way to 7 is one notion, and that is the fatherhood of God…. Along with the Kingdom of Heaven, which you’ve heard again and again in the opening chapters, you now have the foundation of the heavenly kingdom, which is God’s fatherhood, revealed in his Son. You see this already in the Beatitudes, verse 9: ‘Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God’ And then you see it even more clearly stated in verse 16: ‘Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father, who is in Heaven.’ |
