John Paul didn’t seem to be too intimidated by any one authority. I think the reason for this is because he practiced to a heroic degree the virtue of poverty. One day he showed up at Mass and he had no shoes; he had given them to a poor man. So he borrowed the sacristan’s shoes so he didn’t celebrate Mass barefoot. |
