The notion that the Inquisitions were utterly evil and unjustifiable is simply considered common knowledge. And for generations, and for the most part even now, virtually never questioned. Most Catholics today, I imagine, are as repulsed as anyone when they hear the horrible stories of death and torture that are universally associated with the very word inquisition. So much of what I’m going to share is going to come as such a surprise to some people that I fully expect that there will be those who will be tempted to accuse me of trying to whitewash the past or resorting to irresponsible revisionist history. |
