Mt. Carmel is the image that John of the Cross uses to describe the spiritual journey. He compares it to climbing a mount. Climbing the mountain brings out the effort it takes on our part. John says that we’ll never be able to climb Mt. Carmel on our effort—unless God acts in our life, our effort is totally inadequate. But he says that unless we make an effort, the Lord’s not going to see a hunger and desire in our heart that allows him to come into our heart and bring about the transformation that we so much desire. |
